They are a red knife pleat silk jacquard ensemble, and a pair of navy plissé silk pants.

In the 1980s, a certain kind of lightweight silk jacquard fabric became extremely prominent, not only in blouses but in dresses, pants, scarves, and more. By the early 1980s, jacquard silk had already proliferated. In the SS 1983 Collection, Beene incorporated jacquard silks in order to take the idea of “textured silk” to its extreme. The Cherry Silk Ensemble features a red-and-white silk jacquard folded into itself with knife pleats. But the pleats open only slightly at the bottom of the garment, revealing themselves to be pleats rather than part of the fabric’s intrinsic texture. In this way, the pleating of silk jacquard gives it a new kind of texture and increased thickness. To add to this, the garment includes appliqué flowers of multiple silk layers, with beads at the center. By the time this garment reached us, gravity had pulled each appliqué flower differently through space; the resulting garment insisted not just on texture, but a kind of three-dimensionality of its surfaces.

The Navy Silk Plissé Pants create texture by folding jacquard onto itself, but into a different way. Whereas the ensemble’s pleats are sewn shut, the pants’ plissé texture was likely created with heat or chemicals. Unlike the ensemble’s uniform knife pleats, the crinkled plissé has an irregular texture. Its crinkled plissé texture is made more apparent by its high-contrast print, interspersed (seemingly) metallic fibers, and a voluminous gathered waistband with a thick-corded drawstring.

Both of these pieces, and others in the Beene SS1983 collection, demonstrate several ways to create volume with fabric. Jacket A, from the early 1990s, is made out of a visibly woven fabric. It features emerald trim, slate-gray stone buttons, and a hood. Jacket B, in contrast, is monochromatic, and--with the exception of the simple black buttons--of one uniform texture. Its undulating neckline gestures at a Peter Pan collar. For context, Beene had long embraced contrast, texture, and ornamentation. There are three variants: a cream skirt suit with raffia and yarn trim, a cream pantsuit with raffia trim, and a black jacket with raffia trim. The jacket from the Raffia and Yarn Trimmed skirt suit went down the runway.

These three garments are a rare example of a designer revisiting his past collections in his final collection. The raffia trim is reminiscent of a tweed jacket from Blass’s Fall/Winter 1992 Collection. This collection also included a tweed jacket with looped yarn trim.

The Manifold Vintage pieces, all from SS2000, feel simpler by comparison. The jackets are fabricated in a simple crepe of almost uniform texture, the buttons are small, and the resulting pieces are monochromatic. One might say—and we don’t love this language—that the SS2000 jacket speaks more “quietly,” to use the language of the present day. But it feels overly simplistic to say that, at the last show of his career, Blass merely refined what he had done before. And only in comparison to the 1992 variants can a raffia-trimmed suit or jacket be said to speak quietly. We thereby prefer the interpretation that, in lowering chromatic contrast, Blass allowed the wearer to choose how to make these pieces speak. We know the separates were fabricated in cream and black, as we have both versions. The cream jacket was styled with a black bottom on the runway. Some buyers purchased them as contrasting separates. Others purchased sets of one color, like ours.

It is in very good condition. We find that something about this collection (and Armani from this era generally) just feels "cool," from the beautiful shawl collars (like this jacket's) to the voluminous-culotte silhouettes (like the one in our archive). At the beginning of the 1980s, there was a sense of possibility and open-endedness. Magazines spoke of new attitudes towards fashion among both designers and consumers; designers experimented with new silhouettes. As the eighties continued, designers including Armani went in different directions, including the one that is often called “power dressing.” Viewed in hindsight, this jacket might be seen as part of the pivot from 1970s straightforwardness and 1980s glamour.

(The plissé material also means that the hip measurement is not a true maximum.) When laid flat, the waistband falls naturally at approximately 36". The back waistband measures 11" from outseam to outseam, which would theoretically suggest a total waistband measurement of about 22" if the outseams continued straight down the outside of the leg. In practice, however, there is too much material for the waist to be drawn in that far.
