Bill Blass 1970s Black Silk Ensemble
Bill Blass 1970s Black Silk Ensemble
We think this ensemble comes from the Bill Blass 1974 Resort collection, when silk dresses with shank buttons went down the runway. The pants are made of a different silk than the dress, and do not contain a Bill Blass tag. (This is not unusual by the standards of the time. The pants also have some common Bill Blass features, like a “front” tag.) We nonetheless feel relatively sure they were originally purchased, if not designed, as an ensemble. The person from whom we bought the ensemble inherited it from her grandmother, who likely bought it at either Henri Bendel or Bergdorf’s.
Blass seems to have harkened to this piece and its variants in his final show at the helm of the Bill Blass house, Spring/Summer 2020.
