This gown presents something of a dating mystery. Handwritten on an interior Bergdorf Goodman label seems to be "11-18-77." And indeed, the Blass fall 1977 collections (both main line and the diffusion line Blassport) prominently featured full silk-satin skirts like the one on this dress. But other evidence suggests this dress is from the late 1980s, a decade later. First, it contains a tag which states “MADE IN U.S.A. OF IMPORTED FABRIC.” Having handled many Blass pieces from the 1970s and 1980s, we feel strongly that Blass introduced this label around 1985, after amendments to the Wool Products Labeling Act (1939) and Textile Fiber Products Identification Act. (Search “textile” in this downloadable document for more information.) Further, the finishes on this dress are much closer to those of late-eighties Blass (serged seam allowance) than late-seventies Blass (pinked seam allowance). We therefore see it as an eighties dress with which the Blass team evoked design flourishes of ten years earlier. Maybe the first digit of “77” was once more rounded than it now appears, or maybe it was the result of a slip of mind and hand.
