These pants were arguably overshadowed by other garments in their runway presentation: the blue tailcoat with which they were matched had an almost iridescent lapel, and exaggerated shoulders (even by the standards of the period). Their satin shank buttons were hidden by an asymmetrical satin cummerbund (which we love). It is funny to see something we might call a "statement" garment overshadowed in this way. But this was typical of 1980s Claude Montana: the various pieces within ensembles tended both to complement and compete with each other.
