This jacket hails from one of Manifold Vintage's favorite-ever collections: Giorgio Armani Fall/Winter 1981. We find that something about this collection (and Armani from this era generally) just feels "cool," from the beautiful shawl collars (like this jacket's) to the voluminous-culotte silhouettes (like the one in our archive). At the beginning of the 1980s, there was a sense of possibility and open-endedness. Magazines spoke of new attitudes towards fashion among both designers and consumers; designers experimented with new silhouettes. As the eighties continued, designers including Armani went in different directions, including the one that is often called “power dressing.” Viewed in hindsight, this jacket might be seen as part of the pivot from 1970s straightforwardness and 1980s glamour. We think it occupies the perfect in-between space.
