Jean Muir 1970s-1980s Navy Rayon Sailor Dress
Jean Muir 1970s-1980s Navy Rayon Sailor Dress
This description includes two Jean Muir rayon jersey dresses: Dress A and Dress B. This is the listing for Dress B. They are pictured together in this listing's images.
Jean Muir was an architect of jersey rayon. In our April 2026 collection, we present two opposing examples: a navy, tiered-and-paneled sailor dress with a square neckline and contrast stitching, and an all-black column dress with a plunging scoop neckline but few other remarkable details. We feel Muir deeply understood what felt good to wear, whether maximally constructed (this dress, Dress B) or minimally detailed (Dress A). Her intuition about what feels and looks good seems still to resonate decades later. What exactly was the intuition? These dresses together offer a clue: both interact with the wearer through motion. Dress B's appendages flow; Dress Agently restrains steps without constricting.
