It is somewhat alarming to come across one of YSL’s most famous pieces, but with a significant alteration. Whereas the SS 1977 corset in its original form reached the waist, a prior owner decided to crop this one to the waistline. It is impossible to know why the owner made this choice; maybe the garment was damaged in a way that rendered it unwearable without repairs. Nonetheless, the choice to repair the garment suggests an irreverence that is uncommon among collectors of vintage ready to wear. The owner ultimately decided to prioritize their own needs and wants above both the designer’s vision and the imperative to preserve historic pieces.
