Yves Saint Laurent 1970s-1980s Black Cotton Twill Pants
Yves Saint Laurent 1970s-1980s Black Cotton Twill Pants
These trousers contain traces of how one wearer interacted with them; bear with us while we explain. Many Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche trousers have two closures: an off-center, visible button closure that is and an invisible closure centered inside the waistband. At some point, a past user seems to removed the waistband, let out the hips, and reattached the waistband--due to the increased width on the body of the pants, the extra length of the waistband tab was included in the waistband proper. All make sense. But rather than moving the external button closure to the center—they could have done this, the pants weren’t let out that much—they held onto the hook and eye. What did they do with the remaining button hole? Sewed the button into it so it looks like a functional button. Why?
Manifold Vintage sells tailored clothes only when the tailoring was done expertly. We would argue that these pants have been unusually, but expertly, tailored, and perhaps the unusual closure can tell us something about how their owner wanted to wear them.
