This ensemble has been deemed "costume." Before being featured online, this dress caught the attention of several costume designers at a vintage fair. In a totally different context, a seasoned vintage expert saw it and asked if Manifold Vintage ever worked with costume designers. What about this ensemble makes it costumey? In one sense, it is less costumey than other 1980s Yves Saint Laurent pieces: it is not Chinoiserie, or Safari. Part of Saint Laurent's success in this era was to assimilate features of costume--representing wares another place and time--but create garments unproblematically considered clothing. His success is a testament to his power. Why is this particular set seen to fall short in that respect?
These commentators saw this ensemble on hangers and laid flat. We feel a wearer with the right approach could make this set appear completely "clothing" without a hint of "costume," or embrace whatever features makes it "costume."
In very good condition: there are some hanger indentations on the velvet waistband that are minor and not visible when worn as an ensemble.
