We continually source and sell Yves Saint Laurent trousers. We feel they are, in some way, the ur-trouser, from the perfect spacing of the pleats that heightens the feel of total symmetry, to the asymmetry created by the off-center button closure at the waistband. Over decades, the house of Yves Saint Laurent reproduced these elements while riffing on the leg width, pleat volume, and textile. These 1990s pants are similar to YSL’s earlier wide-legged trousers, but while the earlier trousers were commonly made of heavy gabardine wool, these (and others from the 1990s) are fabricated with a less compact, softer wool twill. We would argue that the overall appearance is softer, in part because the surface catches less light.
